Winds Threaten To Worsen LA Fires

There are apocalyptic scenes in Los Angeles, which is back on high alert as the vicious Santa Ana winds ramp up, fanning already uncontained blazes amidst fears of new ones.

It all comes as at least 13 people have died, including one Australian.

As residents face unimaginable loss, the fight against the inferno remains at a fever pitch.

Firefighters have been unleashing an unrelenting aerial assault to slow the flames, but conditions are set to become life-threatening.

“Looking forward over the next few days and into the next week, we’ll be facing another critical weather event,” Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said.

“Elevated to critical fire weather conditions are predicted to continue through Wednesday,” Los Angeles Sheriff Robert G. Luna said.

The four fires, dubbed Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth and Hurst, have, in total, ripped through an area almost the size of Newcastle.

More than 10,000 structures were destroyed, and close to 180,000 were evacuated amidst fears worsening winds could spark new blazes.

Firefighters are desperately trying to stop the uncontained Palisades fire from razing the nearby suburbs of Brentwood, Bel Air and Mandeville Canyon.

L.A.’s mayor and fire chief have a united front after mass criticism over the way the crisis has been handled.

And as the fire fronts worsen, the grim search for bodies goes on.

Tragically, one of the dead was Australian former child star Rory Callum Sykes, who was blind and suffered from cerebral palsy.

So, as help pours in from around the country and the world, just how long can LA hold on?
