Renter Called ‘Inconsiderate’ For Frequently Having Partner Over Without Paying Extra

Debate has erupted online after a renter asked if it was reasonable for his housemate to ask him to pay more rent for having a partner who stays multiple nights a week.

The man posted to the popular Reddit thread AusPropertyChat to share that the “head renter” reached out to him via Whatsapp.

The “head renter” requested he pay for a week’s rent if his partner stayed at the house three nights or more.

“Two-day rule for partners. Third day? You pay for a week rent,” a screenshot of the message read.

“Please pay the extra week of rent. I hope you understand that it costs me money.”

The Reddit poster asked if “this is allowed?”

However, many were in favour of the tenant paying more rent if his partner was staying over frequently.

Many said it was “inconsiderate” and “annoying” to have a partner over so regularly, adding that it would be “unreasonable” to push back on the request as partners being there for multiple days a week adds to utility bills.

“It’s the higher utilities and the awkwardness of dealing with someone not on the lease but living semi-permanently there,” explained one. “Plus, another person in the shower rotation.”

“I didn’t sign up to live with other people’s partners,” added another user. “So if you want to sleep over, sleep at their place. A week of rent is fair.”

Some believed the request was a bit “steep”, suggesting that the partner should “chip in a bit of cash” rather than having the man pay a whole extra week's worth of rent.
