New Travel Warning Issued for Australians Travelling Through Qatar

Australian travellers planning a trip through the Middle East, particularly those stopping over in Doha, are being urged to exercise increased caution, as the government upgrades its travel advice for Qatar.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has elevated Qatar’s advisory level to “Exercise a high degree of caution”, citing the risk of regional instability and potential spillover from ongoing Middle East conflicts.

“We’ve raised our level of advice for Qatar... due to ongoing hostilities in the region,” the updated notice reads.

Authorities warn that tensions could escalate quickly, potentially affecting air travel and safety conditions.

Travellers may face flight cancellations, airspace disruptions, and sudden security changes, especially around demonstrations or protests, which are advised to be avoided altogether.

The shift from Level 1 (“Exercise normal safety precautions”) to Level 2 means the risk profile in Qatar is now considered higher than what Australians might typically encounter in major cities back home.

While the government isn’t advising against travel, it is urging Australians to remain vigilant:

“We’re not saying ‘don’t go’, but you should do your research, stay informed, and take extra precautions.”
