The Top Smells That Remind People of Childhood

Ever catch a whiff of something and think 'Hey! That reminds me of the carefree days of my youth'?

You're not alone, there are a whole lot of smells that bring that rush of nostalgia. A recent survey reveals the top twenty smells that remind people of childhood.

The poll of over 2,000 adults was conducted by the decongestant brand Olbas. But topping the list from respondents as the most common smell that brings back memories of childhood was 'Fresh cut grass'. Coincidentally, 'fresh-cut grass is also the most common smell that brings back memories of 'chores you put off for weeks.'

Clinical psychologist Dr. Angharad Rudkin, speaking on behalf of the brand about the survey, said that "It is incredibly powerful what feelings, emotions and memories smells can evoke." Further down the list of childhood smells was 'Medicines', and we can all guess what kind of memories, emotions and feelings that smell might evoke – revolution, refusal and resistance.

Filling out the list were smells such as 'crayons', 'play-doh' 'your mother's perfume' and 'pencil shavings. This list came from a survey of British adults and is missing some key Australian childhood smells like 'Clag glue', 'squashed ant' and 'pineapple juice spilled on asphalt'.

58% of the respondents involved in the survey said that the smells of childhood helped them relax. So next time you're feeling stressed, pop down to Officeworks, grab yourself a box of Crayolas and have a big sniff. It'll help you unwind.
