Study Reveals Why Parents May Love Bluey As Much As Their Kids Do

A nationwide study has found that Australian families love relatable, authentic TV shows with an Aussie larrikin spirit.

A new, landmark study into kids and their TV habits was undertaken by  by Swinburne University here in Australia.

Their findings also revealed that streaming services dominated Australian TV screens, with most watching kids' TV shows via subscription services on their TV - rather than watching on handheld devices or laptops.

Lead researcher for the study, Associate Professor Liam Burke, said that “The television hasn’t been replaced; it’s still the No. 1 location, but how the content is getting to the television has changed,’’

In the study, ‘Parents’ Perspectives on Australian Children’s Television in the Streaming Era’ also sought out the perspectives of parents as to what made “good” kids’ TV content.

Shows such as Bluey were popular because the show hit many of the key factors parents identified as making a show “good”.

“When parents said [what] was good kids’ TV generally [it] was relatable family dynamics, a quirky sense of humour related to a larrikin sensibility and recognisably in an Australian setting. And when you think about Bluey, it has all three of those three key characteristics.” professor Burke said.

“The Wiggles also had content that was relatable because they referred to issues such as water safety and being sun smart. You’re not going to get that from an overseas show like Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol.” he said.

Many parents also noted that many American shows seem “cheesy” and unrelatable compared to locally made shows.
