Baby name consultant Colleen Slagen shared in a TikTok video that her comment section and direct messages are often flooded with people detesting certain names as they are dog names, not human names.
“Dog names are in, OK?” she said in the video. “That’s a compliment now.”
Touching on dog names, Slagen said that a few specific trends come to mind.
There are the “cutesy nicknames”, as she described them, such as Charlie, Daisy, Sophie, Ruby, Sadie and Archie.
Then there are the “short and sweet” names, such as Leo, Max, Chloe and Luna. She elaborated on Luna, saying that while it is a hugely popular dog name, it’s also the No.10 ranked most popular baby name for girls.
Then you have your “true” dog names, like Bear, Banjo and Blue — which Slagen believes would be super on trend in countries like Australia.
She threw out some “cool, edgy” names, which included Cooper, Maverick and Duke. She pointed out that Maverick and Cooper are both in the top 100 boy names.
“I also get people who are in the pickle of: My mother-in-law’s dog is Teddy, that was our baby name,” Slagen said.
“My dog growing up was a golden retriever named Rosie, which would be super cute for a little girl,” she said.
People in the comment section joined in on the fun, with several sharing their favourite baby names that work for both a human and a dog. .
“My son’s name is Samson…definitely a dog’s name but I don’t care,” one said.
“As a Molly, I meet more dogs with my name than people. I love it!” another shared.
One commenter explained: “My daughter’s name is Pepper and while I was pregnant I kept meeting dogs named Pepper. I love dogs, it made me like the name even more.”
