Research Reveals Gen Z Daters Are Looking For Love At The Supermarket

New research from Smirnoff has revealed that Gen Z are ditching dating apps and hitting the supermarkets in search of love.

Taking inspiration from the generations that came before them, the youth of today are looking to find their love match organically, with 46.8 per cent of Gen Z daters wanting to meet someone in at the grocery store

Speaking with news.com.au, Smirnoff’s marketing manager, Maddy Stockwell said: “We looked into it and our Gen Z drinkers (18+) are sick of living chronically online, especially when it comes to meeting new people.”

“Reverting to old-school tactics, surprisingly almost half of Gen Z daters say they’d like to meet a potential new partner at the grocery store or supermarket.”

These statistics have been obtained in partnership with YouGov, and the results indicate that there’s a serious shift in the chronically online generation's approach to love.

They also revealed that a staggering 77.9 per cent would prefer to meet someone new, whether it be a new friend or love interest, in real life, as opposed to social media.

Earlier in the year, an American woman living in Sydney went viral for testing out her own supermarket dating theory.

In the video, Brooke Alison Laven posted herself walking around Woolworths with bananas in her trolley to TikTok, captioning the footage “Does anyone know what time the singles go to Neutral Bay Woolworths on Mondays? My co-worker told me it is a thing, and if you put bananas in your cart, it means you’re single”.

The theory is that if you walk around the supermarket with bananas in your trolley facing up you are ready to mingle.

“I understand it’s probably an old theory from 90s, but I’d love to bring it back. It just needs some more awareness. Meeting someone at the grocery store and not on the apps is like a modern-day fairy tale,” Brooke told news.com.au at the time.

“I think everyone should do the grocery store because it’s almost like a fairy tale,” Brooke said, adding that it’s a much more pleasant way to meet someone than using dating apps.

“Running into the love of your life at the grocery store shopping, it’s just, it’s so nice.”
