Professor Scolyer shared the candid update on social media, writing, "Unfortunately, my recent scans show some new changes which could be an effect of my previous treatment or recurrent brain tumour."
"I might need surgery in a few weeks time to obtain some tissue so the smart neuropathology team can help to figure this out (which I know isn't always easy)," Scolyer wrote on Instagram.
Professor Richard Scolyer was awarded Australian of the Year in 2024 for his research into melanoma and defied the odds of survival by using his own revolutionary methods to treat his own brain cancer.
Professor Scolyer told The Project on January 26 that he was grateful for the public's support.
"It's very touching that so many people, many of whom I don't know, have been supportive of the tough journey at times," he said before giving a brief update on his health.
"So far, so good. I've got an MRI brain scan on Tuesday, so I guess I'm getting nervous about what that might show, but fingers crossed, there is still no sign of recurrence.
“The longer that happens, the better, and I can get out and enjoy life, keep contributing to society, and meet wonderful people.”
