Man Asks “Am I The A**Hole” For Asking His Rich Girlfriend To Buy Her Own Engagement Ring

A man took to the infamous Reddit platform ‘Am I The A**hole’, to gauge whether it was wrong of him to expect his fiancé to pay for her own ring, as she owns substantially more than him.

“Am I the a**hole for asking my girlfriend to pay for her own engagement ring?,” the 24-year-old man asked.

He went on to justify his thinking, explaining that he’d “like to propose to her because there’s no reason to wait when we both know we want to marry each other.”

“The problem is, I really don’t have a lot of money and my [girlfriend] has a good salary,” he continued. “I know she has more in her bank account than I do for now but we’ll eventually have a joint bank account.”

“Since our money will be shared anyway, I asked if she would pay for her engagement ring,” he added.

“I thought this made a lot of sense and wouldn’t be a problem. I was wrong.”

“My [girlfriend] seemed really offended by this and said that she wouldn’t fully buy her own ring,” he wrote, noting that she’s been “distant” since bringing it up.

“I don’t get this, it’s going to all be OUR money anyway, so why should it matter who pays for the ring?”

Reddit users were quick to tell the man why it matters.

“My ex-husband suggested we split the cost of the ring,” said one commenter. “Notice how well that worked out — you’re the a- -hole.”

“You just elevated ‘freeloader’ to an Olympic sport,” another added.

“If you get dumped in the next 48 hours, I will not be surprised in any way.”

A final commenter wrote, “You are not entitled to her money when you’re married, that’s so gross.”
