CHOICE tested two Daily Juice Co beverages in the green juice range, Green Juice Blend with Folate and Green Mix, and found that they contained no vegetables or naturally green ingredients and used added colouring to earn their green label.
To test their theory that the drinks only got their green appearance from added colouring, CHOICE writer Marg Rafferty bought every single item on the Green Mix ingredients list and mixed her own version.
Rafferty found that "our homemade juice looked more like an orange juice or a pineapple juice," said CHOICE writer Marg Rafferty, who conducted the experiment. "There was nothing green about it."
"Afterwards, I stirred in a little pre-bought colour (141) and – surprise, surprise – the juice turned green and looked almost exactly the same as the store-bought version."
CHOICE argues that when a beverage is called "green juice", there is an expectation that the juice will be green and have some sort of green vegetable in it, such as spinach, celery or kale.
Bega Group, which owns Daily Juice Co, declined to comment when approached by CHOICE.
