'I Didn't Want To Be The Wallflower': Kent Miller-Randle Voted Out After Hat Burning Escapades

Having achieved his dream of earning a spot on Australian Survivor, Kent wasn't going to waste the opportunity by playing it safe.

"As you saw, I was a bit of a teary mess," Kent told 10 Play. "It's been a dream of mine for 26 years, I've loved the show for so long and tried so many times to get on. It was my Mount Everest and achieving it was monumental for me.

"The thing is, once you get to the top of Mount Everest, you don't hang out for a month and a half. You climb straight down, and that's what my journey was like."

Landing on the beach and seeing his Brains tribe for the first time, Kent said it was a "bittersweet" moment glancing over and seeing the Brawn tribe.

"I didn't fit in straight away with my tribe. I tried. We had one machete and I was like, okay let's start building a shelter... I became the machete man running around crazy. No, I was just chopping bamboo and getting palm fronds, that's all I was doing.

"They were all really cool people, don't get me wrong, but I would have loved to play the game with Jesse, Ben, Paulie, Morgan, Kate... I was like, I belong on that tribe! That's where I should be."

Unable to forge a strong connection early on in the game, Kent was a lone wolf on the Brains tribe, and early on he set his sights on Myles. But Kent said he never initially wanted to target Myles.

"I had a lovely chat with AJ... it's one of the only conversations I walked away from feeling there was some sincerity and I thought, I can really play with this guy." But, according to Kent, a few hours later Myles walked up to him to explain that he and AJ planned to vote Kent out.

"I was like, wow, I'm going to be the first to go? If I'm going to be the first I'm going to make this memorable. I didn't want to be the wallflower, I didn't want to be the person voted out who didn't play, or didn't do anything exciting. If I'm on Survivor I want to be a main character.

"So I burnt Max's hat."

With no witnesses to the act, Kent was then able to casually throw Myles under the bus. But when the Brains tribe went to their first Tribal Council, Kent outed himself as the arsonist in a shock move that placed a significant target on his own back. But the tribe had already settled on voting Indy out after she blew up the Coven's plans to blindside Rich, so Kent survived another night.

It was a questionable play from Kent, but the business mogul explained that he saw it as his way out. "You can't just say, 'Hey I want to leave'. I knew if I announced it, that it would be a dagger to the throat... I very much felt like I was on the out... my time was up."

Ahead of Brains' first Tribal Council, Kent said he didn't think to pack his things, but on the second night he knew it would almost certainly be his name that was pulled from the urn.

"I'm sure when the last vote is read there's probably a bit of sadness because my Survivor journey was over. As much as I needed to go, I was mentally destroyed and happy to go home to my wife... I was happy to hear my name being read out, I really was."

The self-proclaimed Komodo dragon and praying mantis, Kent said he loved every minute of seeing the season play out so far. "I know I come across as a villain... I know it comes across as a bit evil, but it makes for good TV and that's what Survivor is. It's the best game in the world and I'm honoured and privileged to walk on that beach."

As for his promise to Max, to replace his hat with one far better than he imagined.

"I'm a man of my word," Kent said. "Max is coming to Melbourne so we're going shopping tomorrow and I'm buying him a new hat. As I said, I'll buy him the coolest hat that he's ever seen."

Australian Survivor Brains V Brawn II continues Monday - Tuesday at 7.30 pm and Sundays at 7pm on 10 and 10 Play
