The new Wicked musical film has taken the world by storm. It explores the origin story of two powerful witches, popular Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, and outcast Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo.
The film, directed by Jon M. Chu, has introduced the musical to a whole new legion of fans.
The musical was adapted from the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.
Fans have been digging around for more details about the origins of the beloved story, with some discovering the meaning behind the name Elphaba.
The name was inspired by the original author of The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum.
In an interview with WGBH, Maguire explained how he was messing around with Baum's initials.
"I invented the name by playing with the author's initials, Lyman Frank Baum. I tried Lafaba, I tried Lafeyba. And then I tried Elphaba. As soon as I got Elphaba, I thought, oh, that's it," he told WGBH.
The film debuted with $164.2 million at the global box office, the third-biggest opening weekend of the year, behind Deadpool and Wolverine and Inside Out 2.
The star-studded film also includes Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard of Oz, Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University's headmistress Madame Morrible and Bridgerton's Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.
Wicked: Part Two is set to be released in 2025 and will delve further into the rivalry between Glinda the Good and Elphaba.
