TikTok influencer Kristy Sarah shared a video styling the “most controversial jeans on the internet” with her 16 million followers, and not everyone was on board with the bold look.
Commenters weighed in on the unique look, one writing, “I want to like them, but I don’t”, and another saying, “No honey, no!”.
Others said they “strangely like them,” and one even declared they would be “ordering immediately.”
The contentious pants don’t come cheap, with one pair of French label Coperni’s one-leg denim trousers costing USD 440 (nearly $700 AUD).
Despite their divisive style and high price point, the jeans are currently sold out in all sizes, with many fashionistas opting to DIY themselves a pair by simply cutting a leg off of some of their pre-loved denim.
Coperni is the latest culprit in a long line of labels pushing one-legged pants in recent years.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, the unique style first appeared in 2018, thanks to designer Sarah Aphrodite. In 2019, Seoul label Pushbutton debuted its one-legged acid wash jeans.
The style made its way to the major fashion houses in 2024 when one-legged pants were spotted on the runway at Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta and, of course, Coperni.
Trend forecaster Agus Panzoni told Dazed that the one-legged trend is a natural progression from the asymmetry trend, and people moving towards more personalised and unique wardrobes.
“Consumers began experimenting with silhouettes, moving beyond traditional symmetries and predefined categories, and asymmetry has grown in prominence since then,” Panzoni said.
