In a statement published by the Daily Mail, Furness, 69, opened up about the “traumatic betrayal” that “cut deep”, after nearly 30 years of marriage to the Marvel actor, 56.
“My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal,” she said.
“It’s a profound wound that cuts deep. However, I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working FOR us.”
“This belief has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage. I have gained much knowledge and wisdom through this experience.
“Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good, our true purpose,” Furness said.
“It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values and boundaries is liberation and freedom.”
Furness added that she learned “one thing” from the divorce: “That none of this is personal.”
The statement seems to allude to rumours that the Wolverine actor cheated on the Australian actress with his now-girlfriend, Broadway star Sutton Foster, whom he met while performing on the revival of The Music Man.
Reports claim the pair privately reached a divorce agreement, which is said to have involved “a handsome spousal support payment.”
The couple initially announced their split in September 2023, issuing a joint statement that read: “We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting, and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
“Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”
Furness and Jackman, who was fresh out of drama school at the time, had met back in 1995 on the Aussie TV show Correlli.
Four months later, Jackman proposed. In a 2018 interview with Today, Jackman said that he knew two weeks into meeting Furness that they were “going to be together for the rest of our lives.”
