The UK’s Home Office revealed to the Daily Mail that applications for UK citizenship have soared in the last quarter of 2024, rising 40 per cent year on year.
More than 6,100 US citizens applied last year, which is 26 per cent more than in 2023 and the most since the records began two decades ago.
Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi left California to move to England following the 2024 U.S. election.
Rosie O’Donnell is now in the process of becoming an Irish citizen, thanks to her Irish grandparents.
In a TikTok video, she revealed that the current political climate in the U.S. is her reason for moving. She relocated with her youngest daughter, Dakota, just days before Trump’s inauguration.
"Although I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that's what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child," O'Donnell said in the video.
"I miss many things about life there at home, and I'm trying to find a home here in this beautiful country," she said. "And when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there, in America, that's when we will consider coming back."
O’Donnell’s announcement attracted backlash from President Trump while he sat down with Irish Prime Minister Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
When a reporter asked PM Martin why he allowed O’Donnell to relocate, Trump quickly responded: “I like that question. Do you know you have Rosie O’Donnell? Do you know who she is? You’re better off not knowing."

UK-born actress Sophie Turner moved back to the UK following her divorce from Joe Jonas.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in October 2024, she shared that she was feeling homesick while living in the U.S. and that she struggled with its politics.
"The gun violence, Roe v Wade being overturned... Everything just kind of piled on," Turner said. "After the Uvalde shooting, I knew it was time to get the f*** out of there."
Back in 2016, Cher threatened to move if Trump was elected. "I'm gonna have to leave the planet," she reportedly said at a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton.
In 2023, the 78-year-old pop star told The Guardian that she “almost got an ulcer the last time” Trump was President.
"If he gets in, who knows? This time, I will leave [the country]."
It is unclear if she is making plans to leave the U.S.
Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox told the Just For Variety podcast that she feared what impacts the election results would have on the transgender community.
Cox shared that she and some friends were considering moving and had been doing research on different cities in Europe and the Caribbean, but no plans have been solidified.
"I don't want to be in too much fear, but I'm scared," the actor added. "As a public figure, with all my privilege, I'm scared, and I'm particularly scared because I'm a public figure. I feel like I could be targeted."
