Supermarkets To Start Selling Covid Rapid Antigen Testing Kits

Coles and Woolworths will begin selling Covid-19 rapid antigen testing kits.

From November 1, Woolworths will sell the test for between $10 to $15, and can already be preordered, the ABC reported.

"Rapid antigen testing is helping protect our distribution centre team members across Australia from COVID-19," a Woolworths spokesperson told the ABC.

"We're now looking to stock at-home self-test kits, which have been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, in selected stores from early November."

Coles will begin selling the tests in early November as well, in all states except Western Australia and South Australia.

The rapid antigen tests take about 15 minutes to deliver a result, and while being cheaper than PCR testing, are less accurate.

The Therapeutic Good Administration advises that rapid antigen tests can detect the virus in the act phase of infection, but have a high risk of both male negative and false positive results.

“Performing confirmatory testing by PCR is very important if someone gets a positive test from a rapid antigen test,” the TGA website advised.

“It is not acceptable to just repeat the rapid antigen test in the hope of the second test being negative. Any positive result needs follow up with a PCR test.”
