Scientists at the University of Innsbruck found that a preference for bitter flavours such as black coffee was linked to psychopathic behaviour traits.
The research surveyed over 1,000 adults asking them to give their food and flavour preferences.
They were then given a series of personality tests that assessed antisocial personality traits like sadism, narcissism and psychopathy.
The personality traits and preferences were then cross-analysed, resulting in the correlative findings.
The closest association found was between enjoyment of bitter foods – like black coffee – and “everyday sadism”, aka finding pleasure in inflicting moderate levels of pain on other people.
The correlation extended beyond just black coffee and those who enjoy raw celery, tonic water and grapefruit.
So if you’re going on a first date any time soon, maybe take a bit of notice of their coffee order.
