The following statement can be attributed to a Defence spokesperson:
We are committed to the safety of all personnel working for the Australian Government in Afghanistan.
Australia offers humanitarian visas to eligible locally engaged employees who are at risk of harm due to their employment in support of Australia’s mission in Afghanistan.
Defence assesses each application to verify the applicant worked for the Australian Defence Force and meets the criteria as set out in legislation (Migration Regulations 1994 Cth).
Once certified as eligible, applicants may then apply for a Humanitarian Visa through the Department of Home Affairs and are given the highest visa processing priority.
The Australian Government has rigorous character and security checks prior to arrival in Australia under our humanitarian program. The Government is working to ensure this process occurs as quickly as possible.
Further questions regarding the resettlement of humanitarian visa holders should be referred to the Department of Home Affairs.
