Spicing Up Your Life Could Help You Live Longer

Lovers of spicy food rejoice - a new study from the Cleveland Clinic has found those who eat chilli may kick on longer than their chilli-hating counterparts.

Researchers analysed four large studies around the link between chilli peppers and health, and found those who eat the spicy food may be 26% less like to die of heart disease and 23% could be less likely to die of cancer. It’s enough to make you reach for the Tabasco. The researchers have posited it could be down to capsaicin, the magic stuff inside chillies that helps make them spicy, as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

However, the researchers have warned that far more research into chillies needs to be done before they can definitely say what the link is.

But what about those who absolutely despise the taste of chillies? You’re in luck, because there are a bunch of other unexpected things that could help you live to a ripe old age.

Perhaps you could go live on a mountain? A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that living at a higher altitude may help prevent heart disease.

Maybe you’re more of an indoors-y type? Sit and read a good book! Yale University studied the reading habits of 4,000 people and found, 12 years later, those who read had a 20% reduction in mortality. Maybe it’s because they weren’t falling down mountains?

Great news for shoppers, another study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health (I’ve got to get a subscription to this thing) found that those who went shopping every day may be able to reduce their risk of death by roughly 25%! More like shopping ‘til you don’t drop, am I right???? But it apparently doesn’t apply to online shopping. This sounds like it may be an expensive way to stay ahead of the ol’ Grim Reaper.
