Jason Isaacs Created Lucius Malfoy's Iconic Look For Harry Potter

Lucius Malfoy is known for his pin-straight icy blonde hair, snake-adorned walking cane and grand capes, but it turns out Jason Isaacs was the mind behind the iconic look.

The 61-year-old actor sat down with Esquire as part of the promotion of Season 3 of The White Lotus, where he plays North Carolina financier Timothy Ratliff.

Isaacs revealed that he was the one who actually came up with the look for the Harry Potter character Lucius Malfoy.

"They showed me sketches of a guy in a pinstripe suit, with hair like I have now," Isaacs told Esquire.

He explained that he had told the hair-and-make-up department that he was hoping for a wig.

"And then they went, 'Why would you want one?' And I said, 'Because he wouldn't want his hair like a muggle. I'd want long blonde hair. My son has blonde hair.'"

The HMU team said that there wasn't anything to show the director.

"There was like a tinfoil wig that you buy at the gas station, and I said, 'Can I borrow that?'

Isaacs was also puzzled to discover that the wardrobe department had him wearing a business suit.

"And I went, 'Really? I was hoping to wear fur and velvet and ermine and have capes.' And they went, 'Why? He's a businessman.'

"I said, 'No, he's not. He's a rich aristocrat, and he would never want to dress like a muggle." They said, 'Well, we don't have anything for you to show the director.'"

Quick-thinking Isaacs grabbed a curtain and draped it around himself and approached director Chris Columbus.

Columbus questioned Isaacs about his stylistic choices, and the actor insisted that his character would not want to dress like a Muggle.

The White Lotus star even came up with Lucius's cane that stored his wand, which took Columbus "three seconds" to think about the idea and respond, "I think the toy guys are going to love you."
