Health Department Statement

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) clinical advice for healthcare providers on the use of COVID-19 vaccines, including advice in relation to pregnant women, will be finalised following consideration of the vaccine candidate by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). This advice will be made available prior to program rollout in February.

The Government communications will be based on this expert medical advice.

The Government does not intend on targeting communications specifically towards pregnant women.

The national public education campaign will help ensure confidence in the rigour of Australia's approval process and encourage uptake of the vaccine when the time comes. Further communication materials and activities will be developed to address the demographic groups which have been found to have relatively higher rates of vaccine hesitancy than the general Australian population, to provide reliable, and scientifically accurate information which may improve their view of the vaccine and increase their likelihood of vaccinating themselves and their families.

Work on the campaign is underway and will begin shortly, with the timing to align with the rollout of the vaccinations.
