Emails Reveal Sydney’s Lockdown Divide Went Against Health Advice To Premier

Emails have revealed the New South Wales government implemented separate lockdowns across Sydney’s west and south-west against advice from Dr Kerry Chant, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

According to the SMH, Dr Chant advised lockdown rules should have been put in place consistently across all of Greater Sydney, instead of singling out specific areas of the city.

Twelve Local Government Areas in the west and south-west of Sydney were subject to harsher lockdown rules that their neighbouring areas.

“Implement consistent measures across greater metropolitan Sydney with outdoor masks, consistent 5km rule and authorised workers only,” Dr Chant wrote in the email of recommendations on August 14, reported the SMH.

Instead, residents in the 12 LGAs could only travel within five kilometres of their house, while others in Sydney could travel up to five kilometres of their LGA.

The emails were released as part of a parliamentary order for the health advice behind lockdown decisions to be released.
