Daughter Calls Out Mum For Demanding 'Lavish Gifts' On Kids' Birthday

A woman has called out her mother for an expensive family tradition.

In a post on Reddit, the 25-year-old woman explained that her mum demands "lavish gifts" on her kids' birthday as a thank you for giving birth.

"Every year on every single one of our birthday, we're expected to celebrate my mom as well," the post said.

"We've done it since we were little. It was taught to me as 'giving thanks for carrying and giving birth to us,' which I'm all for, I am grateful as we wouldn't be here without her."

However, the woman went on to say birthdays have come less about the kids and "more-so an anniversary for the day our mom gave birth".

As the children have reached their adults years, the gifts have changed from cards and homemade presents, to an expectation they will be "monetary gifts".

"Just recently was my birthday and I was gifted some much needed clothes and dishware for my new apartment. My dad however got my mom a new Macbook," she said.

The woman also said her mum drops hints in the months leading up to birthdays about what she wants, but things exploded when her 16-year-old sister was pressured into buying a $300 necklace.

"My sister was worried our mom would be upset and feel underappreciated if she didn't get it. I asked how much it was, and my sister said it was $300. I honestly lost it on our mom and chewed into her later that afternoon when my mom opened her gifts after me," the woman said.

Since the argument, the woman said she's been called "selfish" and a "narcissist" by her aunt, and her mother has taken to Facebook with posts about "letting go of the toxicity in your life".

The woman had turned to other Redditors to question if they felt she was justified in her anger and was met with support for her actions.
