Controversial Banana Statue May Never Return To Melbourne Street

A controversial fruit statue, called ‘Fallen Fruit’, may never be returned to its Melbourne location after it was taken away for repairs.

The Guardian reports that the City of Yarra has yet to decide if the anthropomorphic banana will be reinstated on Rose Street in Fitzroy.

The City of Yarra purchased the 1.8-metre statue for $22,000, using part of a $100,000 bestowed to it by the Transport Accident Commission.

Within weeks of it being erected in early-November, the statue was vandalised, with media at the time reporting it was a decapitation attempt on the statue.

However, it has yet to be returned to its location after being taken for repairs.

Currently, there is a giant plant and flower pot in its place, and the council has yet to decide when Fallen Fruit will be back.

“Fallen Fruit was vandalised and had to be removed. Officers are investigating options, and no decisions have yet been made about whether and how it might be reinstated,” a Yarra city council spokesperson told The Guardian.
