Australia v Fiji

Recap of Australia's opening game of the 2019 Rugby World Cup

A dominant Wallabies side beat Fiji 39-21 in their World Cup opener in Sapporo.

The Wallabies mounted a great 2nd-half comeback after a bruising encounter.

Despite being 9 points behind in the opening minutes of the 2nd half, Michael Hooper's team powered over 4, 2nd-half tries to launch their World Cup campaign.

In a game that was all about the result, Australia started slow - a rampaging Fiji team quickly led with a try and 3 penalties from Ben Volavola.

Trailing 14-12 at the break an early Fiji try in the 2nd half made it 21-12 and an opening-game defeat looked likely.

But the Wallabies powered back - hooker Tolu Latu scoring 2 tries within 5 minutes to push Australia into the lead.

2 more tries from Samu Kerevi and Marika Koroibete made it comfortable in front of great support from green and gold clad supporters in the Sapporo Dome.

In the end, the Wallabies finished comfortably and their confidence will be sky-high going into their next game against Six Nations' champions Wales next Sunday.
