The President of El Salvador has stated he would not order the return of a Salvadoran national who the US government mistakenly deported to a maximum-security prison in his home country. President Nayib Bukele called Kilmar Ábrego García “a terrorist” and insisted he had no power to return him to the United States during a meeting at the White House with Donald Trump on Monday. The comments come after the Trump administration claimed it was not legally obligated to secure the return of Mr García, despite the US Supreme Court ruling that the administration must “facilitate” his return.

Four minors have been killed and several others injured after a car smashed through a building hosting an after-school program in Illinois. Police say the vehicle struck multiple people outside the building in Chatham, rammed through the building and then hit several others inside before exiting the other side just after 3:15pm on Monday. The victims at the YNOT After School Camp are believed to range from four-years-old to 18-years-old, police said. It’s understood the driver was unhurt and was taken to hospital for evaluation, with it unclear whether the incident was deliberate.

Residents in Madrid, Spain, have been heard cheering on Monday as power slowly started returning to the country, after a huge outage brought parts of Spain and Portugal to a standstill. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the grid operator had restored electricity supplies to about half of Spain, but authorities are yet to determine the cause and are "not ruling out any hypothesis". Outages on such a scale are extremely rare in Europe, with this one grounding planes, halting public transport, and forcing some hospitals to suspend routine operations. The total blackout lasted approximately 9 hours, beginning at around 10:33 GMT, with power partially returning at around 19:46 GMT.

One person has died, and several others have been injured after a boat crashed into a ferry in Florida on Sunday night. The Clearwater Ferry, which had more than 40 people aboard, was struck by another boat that then left the scene around 8:45pm. The crash will be investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, with assistance from the Coast Guard.
