Speaking at a business roundtable in Qatar, he said the US would transform the area into a “freedom zone”, claiming there was nothing left to save in the Palestinian territory. Trump first proposed his plan to redevelop Gaza and force Palestinians to leave in February. The idea was widely condemned by Palestinians, Arab nations, and the UN, which labelled it a form of ethnic cleansing. The proposal comes amid a devastating Israeli military campaign launched in response to the October 2023 Hamas attack. The ongoing assault has displaced most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents and killed nearly 53,000 Palestinians, leaving much of the territory in ruins.
